Before Starbucks invaded New York City, you may nonetheless get a cup of espresso on every corner. The chances were that you'd walk away with that espresso in a paper cup that celebrated the Greek background of the person who offered you your espresso. I never knew this until I examine his obituary, but that tumbler become referred to as the Anthora Cup and it became made by means of Solo. The cup made its debut inside the Nineteen Sixties and Solo stopped making them for accurate in 2006.
From CNN :
Angie Gorman, Director of Communications at Solo Cup Co., instructed CNN that Solo now owns Sherri Cup Co., wherein Buck first designed the cup within the early Sixties. The cup can nevertheless be custom ordered, but demand for the cup tapered off within the new century and Solo decided to formally discontinue the product from its catalog in 2006.
Born Laszlo B?Ch in gift-day Ukraine in 1922, Buck arrived in America a refugee of Nazi Germany after World War II. He misplaced his parents to the Nazis, but he survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald. His daughter describes him as a self-made guy, "He came right here with nothing, no dad and mom, no job, no financial savings. He had nothing."
But that didn't prevent him. "Because of what he suffered inside the awareness camps he was any individual who truly believed in respecting humanity, simply was approximately loving your neighbor and respecting your neighbor," his daughter stated.
It was this respect that led him to spend hours inside the library, learning Greek records and design. He wanted to honor the heritage of the Greek diner owners who offered his products and gave him his livelihood.
His design features three steaming golden cups of coffee, and the crucial word 'We are glad to serve you" bordered via two Greek Amphora vases. Buck's kids say his Eastern European accent converted "Amphora" to "Anthora," and that is how it is recognized nowadays.
The Museum of Modern Art sells a ceramic version of the Anthora Cup and I have three of them. Despite the fact that I'm not a New Yorker, New Yorkers' appetite for nostalgia is contagious. Thanks for the accidental icon Leslie Buck.
